Inspiration for the Basket

Fabric baskets are one of Alba’s go-to projects. They’re quick to make, versatile for storage, and can be customized for any season or occasion. For Halloween, she gave her basket a playful twist by adding a jack-o’-lantern face, instantly turning a simple design into a spooky decoration!

It’s also a great project for kids. Children can help design their own jack-o’-lantern faces, sketching silly, scary, or even goofy expressions before cutting out shapes to add to the basket. Younger children can focus on drawing, while older ones can try cutting felt or even adding a few stitches. Each basket takes on its own personality, making the experience extra special.

Let’s Start Creating!

To bring the basket to life, Alba used a combination of outer fabric, lining fabric, fusible fleece for structure, and a small piece of felt for the jack-o’-lantern face. After preparing the fabrics and boxing the corners to give the basket shape, the real fun began stitching down the spooky face.

Instead of fussing over complicated appliqué stitches, I opted for a simple straight stitch to secure the felt pieces. Because felt doesn’t fray, this method works beautifully, and it blends in so well that the stitching doesn’t distract from the design.

Once the face is in place, it’s time to assemble the basket. Sewing the outer fabric, lining, and fleece together gives it just the right structure, while the boxed corners create a roomy shape that holds its form. Adding a pop of orange and green fabric can also give the illusion of pumpkin “leaves,” adding to the Halloween charm.

Meet the DX-2000QVP

This project was made even easier thanks to the JUKI DX-2000QVP. Alba used its piecing stitch (#3) to get a precise ¼” seam allowance while taking advantage of the wide presser foot and full feed dogs for smooth, even stitching. The free arm also came in handy when topstitching around the basket’s opening, making it simple to maneuver fabric in a tight circle.

And for those who like to add flair, the DX-2000QVP offers a wide variety of decorative stitches that could be used to embellish the basket’s edges or add whimsical Halloween details. Whether you want bold stitches for contrast or subtle ones for structure, this machine gives you the freedom to be as creative as you like.

After one final turn and some topstitching, the basket came together beautifully. The fusible fleece gave it structure, the jack-o’-lantern face brought it to life, and the colorful lining added that extra Halloween touch. It’s sturdy enough to hold plenty of candy, yet fun enough to make you smile every time you see it.
